Demonstration Message for U.S. Citizens: Demonstrations on July 21-23, 2015

The U.S. Embassy in Chisinau informs U.S. citizens in Moldova that there are multiple protests and demonstrations planned throughout Chisinau during the week of July 20, 2015, including but not limited to the following:

  • On Tuesday July 21, 2015, a protest will take place in the Main Square. It is scheduled to last from 10:00 to 12:00.  The participants will protest against the draft Government Decision on the prohibition of hunting of waterfowl and hare. About 3000 people are expected to take part in the protest.
  • At a press conference today,  the Chairman of the “Our Home – Moldova” party, Grigore Petrenco, called people to protest against the increasing of tariffs for electricity and natural gas. He said, that on Wednesday July 23, 2015  at 20:00 his Party will protest in front of the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE). They will demand to cancel the decision to raise the price of electricity and natural gas.
  • On Thursday July 23, 2015, a protest will take place in the front of the Chisinau City Hall, located on 83 Stefan cel Mare Blvd between 08:00 and 23:00. The participants will protest for protection of the small businesses. About 500 people are expected to take part in the protest.
  • On Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at 08:00 Liviu Vovc is organizing a protest in front of the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE).  The participants will protest against the rising price of electricity, gas, water and food while wages remain the same. They are calling people to join them. They will meet in front of the Moldova Central Post Office, located on 134 Stefan cel Mare Blvd. and marching to the National Agency for Energy Regulation. They will demand to cancel the decision to raise the price of electricity and natural gas.  More than 150 people are expecting to take part in the event.
  • July 22, 2015 at 09:30 the Socialist Party is organizing a protest in front of the National Agency for Energy Regulation. The participants will protest against the increasing of tariffs for electricity and natural gas. After that, the Socialist Party will march to the Chisinau City hall and Government demanding to cancel the decision to raise the price of electricity and natural gas and asking compensation to citizens in need. About 100 people are expected to take part in the protest.

The Embassy reminds U.S. citizens that demonstrations and large events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational.  Avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.  Large public gatherings can affect all major incoming arteries to the city in which they occur.  Demonstrations in one city have the potential to lead to additional public rallies or demonstrations in other locations around the city and country.
