On Thursday, more than 200 school children volunteered their free time to clean up a scenic stretch of the Ciuhur River running through Cupcini. The Earth Day event, which was organized by the National Environmental Center and funded by the U.S. embassy, helped build awareness of the fragile state of Moldovan waterways and encouraged children to participate in community activities. Several local and regional officials attended the event, as did Steve Labensky, the embassy’s acting Public Affairs Officer. Over the next few weeks similar clean-up programs will take place elsewhere along the Ciuhur River and along the Ialpug River.
